IV Sedation and Anesthesia

As Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, we are unique among the surgical specialties with regards to anesthesia training. During our residencies, we were both trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration. This included IV sedation, general anesthesia and intubation techniques, as well as, complete training in advanced cardiac life support. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we must follow the guidelines set forth by our state regulatory body. By doing so, we maintain a state license that is renewed every year and our office staff are all certified in CPR.

Many patients can have their procedures completed using a local anesthetic to numb the area. For those who wish to be sedated, we offer intravenous (IV) sedation. Ambulatory anesthesia is the administration of medication in the office that induce either general anesthesia where the patient is totally asleep or sedation where the patient is in a semi-conscious state. For most patients requiring sedation, we are often able to perform procedures in our office to maximize your comfort and minimize the inconvenience of surgery in a hospital setting. For patients who may require complete general anesthesia, we perform those surgeries in the hospital.

During your consultation appointment, Dr. Ford will discuss your medical history and your level of anxiety. Your choice of anesthesia is always a personal decision and should be made only after you've had an informative consultation with the oral surgeon. If you have elected to receive intravenous sedation after the consult, you will be given instructions concerning your surgical appointment. Patients who have elected to be IV sedated, must have an escort or driver present in the office prior to your surgery. Your escort will be required to remain on-site through your surgical appointment and will be responsible for driving you home.

Prior to surgery, your Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Ford will review with you the type of anesthetic to be used, as well as the way you're likely to feel during and after the surgery. This is the time to discuss any concerns you may have about any facet of your procedure. Your surgeon may use one or more of the following to control your pain and anxiety: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide-oxygen and/or intravenous sedation. Most patients describe their feelings during surgery as surprisingly pleasant and comfortable. After surgery, you may be prescribed a medication to make you as comfortable as possible upon your return home.
